Green Sea
(Side 1)
The Green Sea area of Horry County is believed to have gotten its name from nearby Green Sea Bay. That name appears on a local land grant dated 1810. By 1820, Norton’s Crossroads, located at this intersection, was the site of Norton’s Mill and a Meeting House, as shown on the Mill’s Atlas Map for Horry District. Several other documents dating from the first half of the 1800s also refer to this area as Green Sea.
(Side 2)
In 1868, Horry County was divided into eleven townships to help implement county government. This area was the hub of the Green Sea community. The long-used descriptive name of “Green Sea” was chosen for the township encompassing this area. In later years, a Post Office was established here and was successively called Powellville and Crescent. Eventually this intersection became known as Blanton’s Crossroads.
