Local history organizations affiliated with the HCHS:

Surfside Beach Historical Society

Dedicated to educating the public about, and preserving the history of, what is now known as The Town of Surfside Beach. That area is what was formerly called the Ark Plantation. The Ark dates back to the 1700s and was once described as a large indigo plantation. It was located on the western (southern) end of the Long Bay near the point where the Long Bay Road (ocean strand at low tide) connected to the historic Broad Road (aka King’s Highway).

Loris Historical Society

Working to preserve the history of Loris, South Carolina and its immediate surrounding communities from 1887, this town was incorporated in July 1902. In the late 1800s, it was the hub of a vibrant railroad depot and agricultural center (eg., tobacco, cotton, strawberries).
