Bucksport

(Side 1)

Known as Murdock Landing in early 1800s. On February 24, 1837, Henry Buck (1800-1870) and Capt. Samuel Pope (1810-1863) jointly purchased from John Newton 432 acres located here. They built a steam-powered saw mill that operated as Pope’s Mill. In the early 1840s, newspaper advertisements recorded numerous incoming ships from islands in the West Indies, such as Trinidad, Martinique, and St. Thomas.

In 1842, Captain Samuel Pope seems to have sold his interest in Pope’s Mill to Henry Buck. The saw mill was then renamed Buck’s Lower Mill. During the mill’s operation it was a profitable business, providing wood products for construction in North & South America. Many local African-American residents are descendants of those who worked in this mill throughout its existence.
