Horry County Historical Society Membership Meeting:

Date: Saturday, July 27, 2024
Time: 1 p.m.
Location: McCown Auditorium, Horry Co. Museum, 805 Main St., Conway, SC 29526

Program: The Battle of Blue Savannah (American Revolutionary War).

While the Battle of Blue Savannah took place in what is now Marion County, some of the participants crossed over into what is now Horry County. At that time, we were all part of Georgetown District, established in 1769. Therefore, we feel it is appropriate for us to learn about this event as part of Horry County history.

Our speaker, Dusty Owens, is a native of Florence County. He graduated from Francis Marion University and served for twenty years in the United States Army. Formerly the head of the Florence County Emergency Management Department, he currently serves as a Methodist Minister. Owens has had a lifelong interest in history. He is especially interested in the Revolutionary War and Francis Marion as both he and his wife have ancestors who fought under Marion. His research on the Battle of Blue Savannah includes reading all of the pensioner’s accounts of the running battle that took place between present day Marion & Horry Counties. He will also share information from other historians and his own thoughts on the battle.

The program will begin at 1:00 p.m. in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway S.C. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call the museum at 843-915-5320 or email them at hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. To view a full list of the museum’s programs, visit their website at http://www.horrycountymuseum.org/.

The Refuge’s Mission:
The Waccamaw National Wildlife Refuge aims to protect and manage diverse habitat within coastal river ecosystems and provide wildlife-dependent recreational activities.

Horry County Historical Society Membership Meeting
Date: Thursday, March 23, 2023
Time: 7 pm
Location: McCown Auditorium (Horry Co. Museum – 805 Main St., Conway, SC 29526)

Program:
Organizational meeting for the Horry County 250 Committee (250th Anniversary of American Revolution)

Mr. Bill Davies, Vice Chairman of the official South Carolina “SC250” Commission, will be our speaker.
The S.C. American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) is encouraging each South Carolina county to create their own “County 250 Committee”.

Mr. Davies’ background stretches across all walks of South Carolina history having served on the Board of Managers for the South Carolina Historical Society and as President of the South Carolina Department of Archives and History Foundation. Along with his numerous accomplishments otherwise, his experience as President of the Palmetto State Military History Foundation provides invaluable historical perspectives and talents to the SC250 Commission.

The process of launching a new and independent government in the Province of South Carolina formally began on July 6, 1774 when leading men in South Carolina met in Charlestown. Tired of British officials not meeting their needs, the group elected five delegates to the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia. At that same meeting, they created the Committee of 99, which soon became the “de facto” government of South Carolina.

The Horry County 250 Committee is the official committee, designated by Horry County Council, responsible for organizing events in observance of the 250th Anniversary of Horry County’s role in Revolutionary War events.
